Kyrgyzstan Prepared with Monkeypox Test Kits
Kyrgyzstan is taking precautions by having monkeypox (mpox) test kits on hand in case of a need to diagnose the virus. The head of the Epidemiological Directorate of the Department of Disease Prevention and State Sanitary, Epidemiological Surveillance, Dinara Otorbaeva, provided this information to 24.kg news agency.
Otorbaeva reassured the public that currently, there is no reason to fear the potential emergence of the disease in Kyrgyzstan. She explained that while the virus has been present in African countries, there are no monkeys in Kyrgyzstan, eliminating a potential source of infection. Additionally, there have been no reported cases of monkeypox transmission through contact or domestically in Europe.
To prevent the spread of the virus, Otorbaeva emphasized the importance of practicing personal preventive measures when traveling abroad. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared the monkeypox outbreak in Africa as a public health emergency of international concern on August 14. The first case of infection outside of Africa was reported in Sweden on August 15, followed by a second case in Pakistan.
Monkeypox can be transmitted from animals to humans and from human to human if proper personal hygiene is not followed. Common symptoms of the virus include a skin rash or mucous membrane lesions lasting two to four weeks, along with fever, headache, muscle and back pain, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes.
It is essential to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of monkeypox. By following proper hygiene practices and being vigilant while traveling, individuals can help protect themselves and others from potential infection.
