Mount Nemrut attracts high tourist numbers during the holiday period
Tourist Density in Adıyaman during Ramadan Feast
Adıyaman, known as the ‘tourism city’ for its numerous historical sites, including the famous Mount Nemrut, which is listed on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List, experienced a surge in tourist visits during the recent Ramadan Feast. A total of 45 thousand local and foreign visitors flocked to the city over the 9-day holiday period.
Local and international tourists alike were drawn to Mount Nemrut to witness the giant statues of the ancient Commagene Civilization while enjoying the breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset from the 2,206-meter-high mountain peak, often referred to as ‘the place where the sun rises and sets most beautifully’.
Following the devastating earthquakes that struck Adıyaman on February 6, 2023, causing significant damage to the city and its historical sites, the tourism sector suffered a major setback. However, swift action from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism led to the initiation of restoration works on the damaged structures, enabling the city to reopen its doors to tourists.
Adıyaman’s Deputy Governor, Mehmet Tığlı, expressed his satisfaction with the revival of the tourism sector post-earthquake, stating, “Despite the challenges we faced, the normalization process helped us quickly recover our tourism momentum. We were delighted to welcome a total of 45 thousand visitors, both local and foreign, during the holiday period.”
One of the tourists, Simon Psibest from France, who is on a world tour by bicycle, shared his experience of visiting Mount Nemrut, saying, “Although the climb was tough, the magnificent views we witnessed made it all worthwhile. We were truly impressed and happy with our visit.”
The restoration efforts and positive feedback from tourists indicate a promising future for Adıyaman’s tourism industry, with Mount Nemrut continuing to attract visitors from around the world with its unique historical and natural wonders.
