MSB Engages in Navigational Map Production in Antarctica
Turkey’s 8th National Antarctic Science Expedition (TAE-VIII) was recently carried out under the auspices of the Presidency, with the Ministry of Industry and Technology taking responsibility and TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute providing coordination. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense made a statement announcing that the Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography Department of the Naval Forces contributed to the production of navigational maps in Antarctica, thereby helping Turkey to achieve consultancy country status. A particular highlight of the expedition was Navigation Petty Officer Senior Sergeant Mehmet Cihan Erol, who began research and measurement activities in Antarctica on February 5, 2024, after arriving with the Turkish Science Team on January 27, 2024. This news was shared on Twitter by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense on February 11, 2024. This marks an important milestone for Turkey’s scientific and exploratory efforts in Antarctica.
