Multiple Earthquakes Hit Hakkari in Quick Succession
Three earthquakes hit Hakkari Yüksekova district
According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a series of earthquakes struck the district of Yüksekova in Hakkari. The first earthquake, measuring 4.4 in magnitude, occurred 7 kilometers underground at 19:37. This was followed by a 3.5 magnitude earthquake at the same depth and location at 19:52. Another earthquake measuring 4.5 in magnitude was recorded at a depth of 2.52 kilometers in Yüksekova at 20:06.
AFAD issued a statement indicating that there were no negative situations following the earthquakes. Field scanning studies continue, and they wished for the citizens’ well-being.
Experts weighed in on the earthquakes, with Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy stating that the region has a history of seismic activity and that the earthquakes may be felt more strongly depending on the ground. He also added that the region is not typically associated with large earthquakes.
Similarly, Earthquake Expert Süleyman Pampal emphasized that the region has the potential to produce severe seismic activity based on its geological location.
After the earthquakes, Fulya Öztürk reported that there is a sense of unease and panic among the residents, with many people being out on the streets. She also mentioned that the region had experienced an earthquake the day before, further contributing to heightened anxiety.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz sent his well wishes to the citizens affected by the earthquakes, expressing hope that the country and its people would be protected from any further disasters.
