National Bank of Kazakhstan Enhances Tenge Design and Security

The National Bank of Kazakhstan has been working on a significant project to redesign the tenge for several years. In 2024, the innovative Saka Style tenge series received top recognition at prestigious global currency competitions for its groundbreaking protective elements and designs that pay tribute to the nation’s heritage.
One of the key features of the new Saka Style banknotes is the incorporation of micro-optical, two-color security threads that create a pulsating dynamic effect, animating the national pattern when tilted. Additionally, the protective patches on the banknotes showcase 3D images of Saka-era artifacts, combining modern technology with historical symbolism to enhance security and visually narrate Kazakhstan’s rich history, nature, and culture.
The 10,000-tenge banknote from the Saka Style series was awarded the title of Best New Banknote of 2024 at the High-Security Printing competition, recognizing the artistic, symbolic, and technological achievements in banknote design at a global level. This award not only celebrates the advanced security features of the banknote but also the intricate representation of national identity and functionality.
Furthermore, Kazakhstan’s 10,000-tenge commemorative banknote and the TEŃGEGE 30 JYL (30 years of tenge) commemorative coin were named finalists in the International Association for Monetary Affairs’ (IACA) Excellence in Currency Awards for the Best Commemorative Banknote and Coin categories. These concepts were created by the designers of the National Bank, showcasing the innovative and creative talents of Kazakhstan’s currency designers.
Overall, the redesign of the tenge through the Saka Style series has not only elevated the currency’s security features but also highlighted Kazakhstan’s rich heritage and cultural wealth through its innovative designs. The recognition and accolades received at global currency competitions are a testament to the success of this multi-year initiative by the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
