Ministry of Energy Implements New Electricity Tariff Changes for Businesses, Not Residences

False information regarding electricity consumption charges clarified by Ministry of Energy

The Ministry of Energy has addressed the circulating false information on social media regarding electricity consumption charges in Uzbekistan. Reports claiming that if electricity consumption exceeds 200 kWh, each additional kilowatt will be charged at 540 UZS instead of 900 UZS have been deemed inaccurate by the Ministry.

It was clarified that the change in charges applies only to legal entities and not the general population. A government decree (Resolution No. 894) issued on December 27 has reduced additional payments for electricity and gas consumption above the established norm for entrepreneurs while also increasing the limit.

Prior to the decree, legal entities faced double the tariff if their electricity consumption exceeded the contract limit by more than 10%. With the new changes, entrepreneurs will only pay the basic tariff if their consumption surpasses the limit by up to 20%. If it exceeds by more than 20%, a 20% higher payment than the basic tariff will be applied.

The Ministry emphasized that Clause 85 does not apply to household consumers, and the confusion arises from misinterpretation of the government decree. The norms for gas and electricity consumption only apply to legal entities, excluding household consumers.

The Ministry mentioned that due to bloggers misunderstanding the essence of the decree and spreading incorrect information, confusion has arisen among the population. It was reiterated that social norms for energy consumption have been introduced since May 1, 2024, with specific limits for electricity and gas consumption for different periods of the year.

Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov confirmed that there are no plans to increase the 200-kWh electricity consumption limit, providing clarity on the government’s approach to analyzing and implementing consumption patterns and standards.

Furthermore, starting from April 1, 2025, gas and electricity tariffs will see an increase, but the Uzbek government will continue to subsidize prices until 2027. The state budget will allocate funds to cover the difference between market prices and retail prices for gas and electricity.

Overall, the Ministry of Energy aims to dispel misinformation, clarify regulations, and ensure transparency in energy consumption charges for both legal entities and the general population in Uzbekistan.
