National Broadcaster Agrees to Pay Compensation in Trump Victory Case
ABC News Agrees to Pay $15 Million in Charitable Donations to Trump’s Legal Team
ABC News has reached an agreement with former President Donald Trump’s legal team, which was made public recently. The agreement involves the television company paying $15 million in charitable donations to “a presidential foundation or museum established by or on behalf of the plaintiff” and issuing a public apology in a defamation lawsuit against Trump. Additionally, ABC News will pay $1 million in attorney fees for the plaintiff.
Trump took to his social media account to express his thoughts on the agreement, calling it an important legal victory and emphasizing the importance of accuracy in journalism, especially when it comes to public figures.
The legal dispute stemmed from an interview on ABC News, where host George Stephanopoulos repeated 10 times that the jury in the E. Jean Carroll case in New York found Trump guilty of “rape.” Magazine writer E. Jean Carroll had accused Trump of raping her in a New York store in 1996, but Trump denied the allegations.
While the court jury found Trump guilty of assault, insult, and sexual harassment in May 2023 in the case filed by Carroll, they determined that Carroll could not prove the allegations of “rape.” Trump was ordered to pay $5 million for assault and insult and $83.3 million for damages caused to the plaintiff.
This agreement marks a significant development in the legal battle between Trump and ABC News, highlighting the complexities and challenges surrounding defamation cases involving public figures.
