National Team Athletes Honored in Ashgabat for Winning Awards
Turkmenistan’s Olympic Town held a celebratory ceremony on Thursday to honor the athletes who have brought accolades to the country in international competitions over the past few months. The event coincided with Ashgabat’s City Day and was organized on behalf of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov who conveyed his congratulations to the winners. The president’s message was read out during the ceremony, where athletes were felicitated with valuable gifts from the President and national leader, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The country’s weightlifters made a mark at the Asian Championship in Chinju, South Korea, while swimmers participated in Uzbekistan’s Open Championship, and karate players won medals at various competitions including the Yerevan Ararat Cup, Tashkent Asian Cup, and Euro-Asian Ashihara Karate Championship in Istanbul. Taekwondo athletes bagged victories at an international tournament in Tallinn, Estonia, while freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers returned with medals from competitions in Bucharest, Romania. Turkmen kickboxers participated in Turkey, where they also fought hard to bring medals home.
Trophies were awarded to representatives of other sporting disciplines as well, including judo, wrestling, young tennis players, the youth hockey team and even the student team, for their outstanding performances in different international tournaments. The winners of the European Open Paralympic Powerlifting Championship, held in Tbilisi in autumn 2022, were also applauded with special attention.
The ceremony was a proud moment for Turkmenistan and its athletes, who are continuously making a mark in the field of sports on the international stage.
