Nearly 200 Terrorist Attacks Foiled in CIS Countries Last Year

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries have faced nearly 200 attempted terrorist attacks in the past year, with the majority being successfully prevented. This information was shared by the head of the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center, Evgeny Sysoev, during a conference in Tashkent focused on combating terrorism and extremism.

Sysoev highlighted that over 300 terrorist crimes were attempted in CIS states in 2023, including 195 terrorist attacks. Thanks to the vigilance of competent authorities, the majority of these attacks were thwarted during the planning stages, preventing casualties and minimizing damage.

Despite the efforts that led to more than 2,100 criminals being held accountable for terrorist acts in CIS countries, terrorism continues to pose a significant threat to society. Sysoev referenced specific incidents, such as terrorist attacks in Russia at Crocus City Hall, Derbent, and Makhachkala, as well as attempted attacks in Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

The CIS Anti-Terrorism Center head emphasized that terrorism is a global issue, affecting almost all countries worldwide. These challenges underline the importance of continued cooperation and coordination among nations to combat terrorism effectively.
