Nearly 50,000 Residents Return Home After Floods
Kazakhstan Continues Efforts in Flood Relief, Monitoring Rising Water Levels and Wildfire Risks
As of May 6, the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Kazakhstan has reported that a total of 49,945 Kazakh citizens have returned to their homes in regions affected by flooding. Efforts to pump water from flooded areas and residential buildings continue across the country.
In Kulsary town in the Atyrau Region, military personnel are working to pump water from the remaining 20 flooded houses while also conducting disinfection work. Water has been successfully diverted and pumped out from 8,958 residential buildings and 2,994 courtyard areas.
In the city of Petropavlovsk and the Kyzylzhar district of the North Kazakhstan Region, water was diverted and pumped out from 184 houses within 24 hours. Additionally, construction of a 2.5-kilometer dam in the Aktobe Region is ongoing to manage increasing water levels in the Torgai River, with over 30,000 bags and 19,000 inert materials utilized for the project.
Water levels are being monitored hourly, especially in anticipation of heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight in the south, southeast, and east of Kazakhstan. Forecasted heavy precipitation on May 6-7 poses a particular risk in the mountainous and foothill areas of the Zhetisu Region, where slope runoff and rises in water levels may result in spills and flooding.
Meanwhile, in northern Kazakhstan, freezing temperatures are expected to drop to six degrees, and several regions, including Mangystau, Atyrau, Karagandy, Kyzylorda, Aktobe, and the Ulytau Region, face a high risk of wildfires. The situation is being closely monitored, and special precautions are being taken to mitigate the potential impact of these environmental challenges.
