Tension rises as Turkey’s close relations with Syria cause discomfort in Israel
In a recent development, Turkey’s close relations with the new administration in Syria have stirred unease in Israel. In response, the administrations of Israel and Greece have come together and made the decision to produce weapons jointly.
The Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Micotakis recently met with Israeli President Herzog and Prime Minister Netanyahu, where the decision for joint weapon production was reached. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also targeted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a virtual media post on March 31.
Dr. Ufuk Necat Taşçı, a faculty member at Çanakkale 18 Mart University, commented on the situation, stating, “Turkey may face challenges, especially with Europe, the US, and Russia, but if handled correctly, it could lead to tensions in the Mediterranean.”
Moreover, Dr. Enis Tulça from Galatasaray University noted, “Turkey’s renewed proximity with Western actors due to European security needs has not been well received by Israel, prompting Greece to align with them. This has led to Greece’s opposition to Turkey while seeking continued armament.”
Notably, Greece recently celebrated the establishment of the EOKA gang, which had a violent history in Cyprus, in schools. Additionally, an anti-Turkey organization was formed in Southern Cyprus, vowing to combat Turkey’s presence on the island.
In response to these developments, Taşçı explained, “While Cyprus has always been a point of contention between Turkey and Greece, they have accepted the integration of our fellow countrymen.”
The situation continues to evolve as tensions escalate in the region.
