Budapest to Open New Beaches and Pools on the Danube This Summer
Officially, there are only two places where you can bathe in the River Danube in Budapest: the Római Beach, which is accessible to everyone for free, and the Flava Beach at the Kopaszi Dam, which is quite expensive for ordinary citizens. However, this summer, a new pool and beach are set to open in Budapest, providing locals and tourists with the opportunity to swim in the cleaner waters of the Danube.
Historically, there used to be many floating wooden swimming pools on the Danube in Budapest, dating back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, these pools were destroyed during World War II and were never reestablished due to pollution concerns caused by factories upstream.
In recent years, the water quality of the Danube has improved, making it suitable for swimming and bathing. Organizations like Valyo have been monitoring the water quality, and places like the Római Beach and the Flava Beach are now popular spots for river bathing.
Plans are underway to open two new beaches and pools on the Danube this summer. The municipal leadership, led by Gergely Mayor Christmas, is working to create a new free beach near Savoya Park and reopen floating pools near Pünkösdfürdő in Budapest’s 3rd district.
With the water quality of the Danube gradually improving, Budapest is set to become not only the city of the Danube and baths but also the city of bathers in the Danube. Residents and visitors can look forward to enjoying the river in a safe and clean environment this summer.
