New Scientific Approaches for Sustainable Development in the Aral Sea Region
The international conference “Goodwill Ambassadors of the Aral Sea Region,” held during the International Aral Sea Tourism Week in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, brought together experts from around the world working towards sustainable development and environmental restoration of the Aral Sea region.
Key speakers at the event included Jasur Salikhov, Rector of the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University), Bakhytzhan Khabibullaev, Director of the International Innovation Center for Aral Sea, and Stella Seung Yeon Lee, head of the Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) regional office in Uzbekistan.
Jasur Salikhov introduced the Climate Science Residency program by Green University focusing on training climate leaders, conducting interdisciplinary research, and fostering innovations in various fields. Bakhytzhan Khabibullaev discussed the projects of the International Innovation Center for Aral Sea, emphasizing the use of innovative technologies for ecosystem restoration. Stella Seung Yeon Lee presented the outcomes of the Aral Sea Green Rehabilitation Investment Project (GRIP) highlighting the success in sustainable agriculture practices and investments in the region.
These presentations showcased the importance of collaboration between science, international organizations, and government support in restoring the Aral Sea region. The initiatives presented serve as inspiring examples of how environmental challenges can be overcome through innovation and sustainable development efforts.
