New Taximeter Surcharge for Istanbul: 2800-3200 Lira

Taximeter Tariff Increases for Commercial Taxis in Istanbul

As of Monday, taximeter tariff loading has begun for commercial taxis in Istanbul, resulting in a significant 28.09 percent increase. This adjustment comes after the recent UKOME meeting where public transportation fees were raised by 18 percent, while taxi, minibus, and school bus fees were increased by 28.09 percent.

With the new taximeter tariff, adjustment fees for commercial taxis are expected to range from 2800 lira to 3200 lira. As a result, drivers anticipate an increase in their half-day and full-day wages. Half-day wages, currently at 1000 liras, are projected to rise to around 1250 liras, while full-day wages are expected to reach 2500 liras.

The new taximeter tariff also brings changes to the starting prices for different types of taxis. For yellow taxis, the starting price is now 24.55 lira, with a rate of 17.62 lira per kilometer and 90 lira for hop-on and hop-off. Turquoise taxis have a starting price of 28.24 lira, a rate of 20.25 lira per kilometer, and 102.5 lira for hop-on and hop-off. VIP taxis now start at 41.74 lira, with a rate of 32.5 lira per kilometer and 153.7 lira for hop-on and hop-off. Similarly, 8+1 taxis have a starting price of 31.92 lira, a rate of 22.90 lira per kilometer, and 115.3 lira for hop-on and hop-off, aligning their tariffs with yellow taxis.

However, the adjustment in tariffs has sparked a reaction from the owners of 8+1 taxis, who argue that their vehicles incur higher expenses due to their size, maintenance, and fuel consumption. They have expressed concerns that operating at the same tariff as 4+1 taxis will lead to financial difficulties for them.

Despite the increase in taximeters, taxi plate prices have remained steady, with prices ranging between 6.7 million lira and 7 million lira. However, gallerists predict that plate prices could reach 10 million lira by 2024.

The rise in taxi costs, including maintenance, traffic insurance, and fuel expenses, has put financial pressure on taxi owners and tenants. With heavy maintenance required twice a month and significant insurance costs for accidents, the burden on taxi drivers has intensified.

As the new taximeter tariff takes effect, the impact on taxi drivers and the industry as a whole remains to be seen. It is clear that the adjustment will have both immediate and long-term implications for those operating in the commercial taxi sector.
