Newly-Introduced Return System Rolls Out with First Batch of Bottles in Stores

The first returnable bottles have made their debut in Hungary, as reported by news outlet Riposte on its TikTok page. These reverse vending machines were previously available in larger stores, but now they are open for use, according to Mandarin.

The bottles eligible for return are those that are clearly labeled for such purpose. It is essential to note that only bottles in unharmed condition can be accepted for return. Additionally, bottles of unique shapes and sizes that cannot be processed by the machine, as well as products with an annual production of less than 5,000 units, are not subject to this regulation.

For non-reusable packaging, a deposit of HUF 50 per piece will be charged (1 EUR is equivalent to 393 HUF). As for reusable packaging and refillable bottles, the redemption fee will be determined by the manufacturer.

In Hungary, individuals have the option to receive a voucher in exchange for the returned bottles, transfer the funds to their bank account, or even donate the amount to charity.

The mandatory bottle return system came into effect on January 1, 2024, requiring grocery stores with a floor area exceeding 400 square meters to install a reverse vending machine provided by MOHU Zrt. The waste management company suggests that stores between 200 and 400 square meters voluntarily participating in the return system should also incorporate vending machines. For smaller stores joining the initiative, a mobile system developed by Hungarian experts is set to enable bottle collection starting April 1, 2024.
