Nicholas Roerich’s Central Asian Expedition Painting for Auction at One Ruble
Nicholas Roerich’s painting “Takla-Makan” is set to go up for auction with a starting price of just one ruble. As of June 13, the leading bid for the artwork has already reached an impressive three million rubles, according to the Litfond auction house’s website.
The painting is a sketch crafted by Roerich during his Central Asian expedition, which took place between 1923 and 1928. Specifically, the artist created this piece while the expedition team was navigating the borders of the Takla Makan desert, from the Sanju pass to the city of Khotan, during the period of late 1925 to early 1926. Throughout the expedition, Roerich produced a series of paintings that beautifully captured the unique landscapes and nature of the Asian desert.
Aside from being a renowned painter, Roerich was also widely recognized as a stage designer, philosopher, mystic, archaeologist, and traveler.
