Official Arrested in Bribery Scandal Involving $30,000 in Tashkent
A deputy district governor in Tashkent’s Uchtepa district, who had previously been convicted three times, has been apprehended in a sting operation for corruption. The official was caught accepting a $30,000 bribe from a citizen who was looking to start a business and acquire a land plot through auction.
According to reports from UzA, the deputy governor had promised the aspiring entrepreneur that he could use his connections with high-ranking officials to secure 210 square meters of land for the construction of four retail shops within the district. He assured the individual that he would facilitate the process of winning the auction and registering the land in their name. However, law enforcement intervened and caught the official red-handed during the illegal transaction.
It was revealed that the arrested deputy governor had a history of past convictions, including charges related to embezzlement, fraud, and abuse of power. A criminal case has been opened against him under charges of fraud and giving bribes, and he is currently in custody as a pretrial measure.
This incident is not isolated, as other officials in Uzbekistan have also been caught in high-profile bribery cases. Examples include the head of the Emergency Situations Department in Pop district, who was caught with $160,000, and a Samarkand regional police officer who accepted a $10,000 bribe during sting operations. These cases highlight the ongoing struggle against corruption within the country’s government and law enforcement agencies.
