Ombudsperson: Transforming the Media Landscape with Innovation

Transforming Media Landscapes in Azerbaijan: Insights from Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva
In a rapidly evolving digital age, Azerbaijan has witnessed a significant transformation in its media landscape. This was emphasized by Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva during the second forum titled "Public Processes in the Media Space," held in Baku. According to Aliyeva, the swift adoption of digital technologies and the modernization of media practices have created a fundamentally new media environment in the country.
Aliyeva underscored that an independent media is critical to the foundation of a legal state. She highlighted the importance of safeguarding freedom of thought, speech, and press as essential pillars of democracy. The media plays a vital role in the legal education of society, providing timely and objective information on ongoing events.
However, this new digital landscape comes with its risks. Aliyeva pointed out concerns surrounding misinformation, hate incitement, invasion of privacy, digital harassment, and cyberbullying, which can provoke aggressive behavior among the public.
To address these challenges, Aliyeva stressed the need for media activities to be governed by robust legal and ethical frameworks. She advocated for a balance between upholding national values and ensuring that media practices adhere to human rights principles, reinforcing the idea that responsible journalism is foundational to a thriving democracy.
As Azerbaijan continues to navigate the complexities of a modern media environment, the call for ethical standards and regulatory measures becomes increasingly important. Aliyeva’s remarks serve as a reminder that while digital advancements open doors to new possibilities, they also necessitate a careful and conscientious approach to media practices.
