In a poignant message shared on social media, Ömer Çelik, spokesman for the AK Party, commemorated April 27 as a significant day in Turkey’s political landscape. He emphasized that this date marks a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards democracy, recalling the events of 2007 when a military memorandum threatened the democratic process ahead of presidential elections.
Çelik recalled how, during this turbulent time, Turkey faced a dangerous challenge to its parliamentary system. He stated, "On April 27, 2007, our democracy encountered a memorandum from the military tutelage, which attempted to undermine the will of the parliament through abuse of power and disregard for the judiciary." His sentiments reflect a broader narrative of resistance against external influences over democratic governance.
He vividly remembered the atmosphere of that crucial night, stating, "Ankara was enveloped in a darkness with the so-called memorandum attempt, signaling the potential end of our government. I remember the courage of our president and our Republic’s government until dawn."
In his message, Çelik underscored that attempts to exploit democratic systems would not be tolerated, referencing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s firm response to the memorandum: “An institution affiliated with the Prime Minister cannot issue a statement against the government in a democracy.” He highlighted that the heart of Turkey’s political integrity lies in the will of its people and the future of its democratic state.
As the nation reflects on these significant events, Çelik’s message serves as a reminder of the continuous struggle for democracy and the importance of safeguarding it against any form of military influence or internal threats.
As April 27 approaches once again, it remains a day to not only remember but also to reaffirm Turkey’s commitment to democratic values and the sovereignty of its parliamentary system.
