Online Submission of VAT Returns Available

Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration Launches Electronic VAT System

The National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary (NAV) has introduced the electronic VAT system (eÁFA) at the beginning of the year. According to the office, VAT returns can be submitted starting from February 1, with certain system functions available for testing beforehand.

The new eÁFA system is designed to facilitate the electronic and accurate fulfillment of tax obligations for taxpayers. It aims to reduce administration and serve the data needs of taxpayers’ management systems.

Users will have access to eÁFA via a web interface or machine-to-machine connection from January 1. Additionally, the system will offer query services pertaining to taxpayers’ data, online invoices, online cash register receipts, and customs procedures data, as well as tax codes.

From February 1, all system functions will be available, including changing the tax code, closing the period, preparing a draft return, pre-auditing, and submitting the return.

The eÁFA system will also simplify the legal compliance of businesses and accountants, while reducing administration should encourage a higher level of digitization.

Taxpayers with a monthly frequency of VAT returns have until February 20, 2024, to file their returns in the system, while those with a quarterly frequency have until April 20, 2024. Taxpayers with an annual frequency can file their VAT returns for the first time in 2025.

Overall, the new electronic VAT system is expected to streamline the VAT return preparation process and contribute to a more efficient and digitized tax administration.
