OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Steps Down
OpenAI has announced that CEO Sam Altman will be leaving his position as CEO and the board of directors. In a statement released by the company, it was noted that the company’s chief technology officer Mira Murati will temporarily take over Altman’s position.
Altman, an American entrepreneur, investor, and programmer, is known for his previous roles as the CEO of Reddit and as one of the founding partners of Loopt. Despite dropping out of Stanford University before completing his undergraduate degree, Altman has had a successful career in the tech industry.
In 2005, at the age of 19, Altman founded Loopt, a location-based mobile social networking application, before later becoming a partner at Y Combinator in 2011. His involvement with Y Combinator ultimately led to his transition to a more passive Chairman role in 2019 in order to focus on OpenAI.
Altman briefly served as the CEO of Reddit for eight days in 2014, and on July 10, 2015, it was announced that Steve Huffman would be returning as CEO. In 2020, Altman left Y Combinator to focus on OpenAI full-time as CEO.
The announcement of Altman’s departure from OpenAI comes as a surprise to many in the industry, but with the temporary appointment of Mira Murati, the company is well-positioned to continue its work in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
