Opposition Criticizes Budapest’s EUR 38 Million Firework Spend as Irresponsible

The Democratic Coalition (DK) has raised concerns over the government’s allocation of HUF 15 billion (EUR 37.9 million) for the Budapest fireworks display on 20 August.

In a statement made on Saturday, the party’s spokesman, Balázs Barkóczi, criticized the decision to spend such a large sum on the annual fireworks show. While acknowledging the significance of the event in celebrating the foundation of the Hungarian state, Barkóczi emphasized that the current state of the country’s affairs did not warrant such extravagant spending.

During an online press conference, Barkóczi highlighted various issues plaguing the nation, such as the lack of adequate air conditioning in hospitals leading to the postponement of surgeries, financial struggles faced by families during the back-to-school season, and cuts in the central budget affecting public transport funding. He argued that a portion of the HUF 15 billion should be redirected towards addressing these pressing concerns.

The backlash from DK comes at a time when many citizens are questioning the government’s priorities amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainty and social challenges. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the criticism and whether any adjustments will be made to the budget allocation for the upcoming fireworks display.
