“Organizing an Information Panel on the Donkey Management Project” – BRTK

Tashkent Nature Park Launches Donkey Management Project

Tashkent Nature Park recently organized an information panel about their new “Donkey Management Project” in Central Nicosia. The park’s director, Kemal Basat, highlighted the significance of addressing the issue of stray donkeys in the Karpaz region.

Basat emphasized that donkeys, despite being stray, are a domesticated species that cannot be left to fend for themselves. He pointed out the negative impact of uncontrolled donkey populations on both nature and the local community in Karpaz.

The director revealed that Tashkent Nature Park has been conducting research and pilot studies on this matter since 2017. He expressed concerns about the rapid increase in donkey population over the past 50 years and their detrimental effects on the ecosystem.

Basat urged for a proactive approach towards managing the donkey population, emphasizing the importance of implementing a comprehensive management plan. He criticized the previous attempts at using barrier areas for controlling donkeys, stating that these measures were ineffective and poorly planned.

To address the issue, Tashkent Nature Park has initiated the “Donkey Management Project” in collaboration with relevant authorities. The project, spanning over 10 years, includes health checks for donkeys and population control measures such as neutering.

Basat called for support from the community, encouraging donations towards the project. He revealed that the project requires an average of 600 euros per donkey, with Tashkent Nature Park contributing 400 euros and seeking 200 euros in donations for each donkey.

In addition to population control, the project aims to enhance the health and well-being of donkeys through regular check-ups and the establishment of a proper management system. Basat also suggested alternative solutions such as relocating goats and sheep in the area to accommodate donkeys and potentially setting up a donkey farm for tourism purposes.

The “Donkey Management Project” is a crucial step towards addressing the growing issue of stray donkeys in the Karpaz region. With community support and effective management strategies, Tashkent Nature Park hopes to create a sustainable solution for coexisting with these domesticated animals.
