
OSCE Seminar in Turkmenistan: Prioritizing Reduction of Methane Emissions

Turkmenistan Participates in OSCE Seminar on Methane Emission Reduction
Representatives from the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan, as well as the State Concerns “Turkmengas” and “Turkmenoil” recently took part in a seminar organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) focused on monitoring and scientific research related to the reduction of methane emissions. The event was held on November 6 and 7, 2023.
The two-day online seminar was designed to showcase best practices from OSCE participating States in the verification of methane emissions, as well as to introduce relevant measuring and monitoring methods.
According to William Leaf, Acting Economic and Environmental Officer, “Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and climate pollutant, which poses a serious threat to security and ecological stability.” He added, “We organized this seminar to support the efforts of the government of Turkmenistan in promoting ecological sustainability, and assist with the implementation of the Roadmap for the development of international cooperation for 2023-2024 adopted with the aim to explore the prospects of Turkmenistan’s accession to the Global Methane Pledge.”
Throughout the seminar, international experts provided insight into the assessment of possibilities and results of methane emission reduction, as well as its technological aspects. The discussions primarily revolved around the verification of methane emissions and the various methods for measuring and monitoring them.
Overall, the seminar aimed to contribute to the government of Turkmenistan’s efforts in promoting ecological sustainability, and to help in the exploration of the country’s potential accession to the Global Methane Pledge.
