Over 12,000 Marriages End in Divorce in Kyrgyzstan in 2023

Bishkek – 29 February 2024

A recent report from the Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Migration in Kyrgyzstan has revealed some concerning statistics regarding marriage and family dynamics in the country.

In 2023, a total of 45,495 marriages were registered, while 12,552 marriages ended in divorce. This data was presented as part of a supporting document for a new Family Code being drafted by the ministry.

Comparing these figures to 2011, when 56,509 marriages and 8,705 divorces were recorded, it is evident that there has been a significant shift in societal attitudes towards family relationships. Official state registration of relationships between individuals is no longer seen as essential, with many opting for undocumented unions or religious ceremonies instead.

This change in perspective has led to an increase in children being born out of wedlock, with approximately 13,000 such births occurring in 2021. Additionally, there are currently 10,868 children with parents in residential institutions, although only 3,500 of them are eligible for placement in alternative family settings.

These statistics highlight the evolving landscape of family structures in Kyrgyzstan and underscore the need for policymakers to address the changing needs and dynamics within the population. The draft of the new Family Code will play a crucial role in providing legal frameworks and support mechanisms for families in the country.
