Preliminary Results Show Majority Support for Nuclear Power Plant Construction in Kazakhstan
Bishkek – 09:50, 07 October 2024 – According to preliminary data, 72.3 percent of referendum participants supported the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, while 27.7 percent voted against it. The Institute of Public Policy of the largest political party in the republic, Amanat, reported these findings.
The Institute of Public Policy conducted an exit poll with over 600 interviewers and supervisors covering 300 polling stations. More than 44,160 citizens participated in the survey.
The Central Election Commission of the country reported that as of 8 p.m. when the polling stations closed, over 7.8 million citizens took part in the vote. The preliminary final turnout reached 63.87 percent, marking the success of the referendum.
The preliminary results of the vote will be announced today, October 7, at a special briefing in the Central Election Commission. The counting of votes at the referendum polling stations should not exceed 12 hours from the start of the vote counting, as per current legislation.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev publicly supported the construction of a nuclear power plant, stating that the project will lead to sustainable progress and energy sovereignty for the country. He emphasized that if the construction is approved in the referendum, it should be carried out by an international consortium.
