Pannonhalma Archabbot Discusses Child Protection with Pope Francis
Pope Francis Meets with Archabbot T. Cirill Hortobágyi of Pannonhalma
Pope Francis recently welcomed Archabbot T. Cirill Hortobágyi of Pannonhalma and his delegation at the Vatican for a private audience. The meeting focused on the historic diplomatic relationship between the Vatican and Pannonhalma, as well as the ecumenical commitments of the Benedictine abbey and child protection.
During the audience, which took place on Monday, discussions also touched upon the commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the consecration of the Pannonhalma Archabbey, with Pope Francis being presented a coin issued by the Central Bank for this occasion. T. Cirill Hortobágyi highlighted a longstanding tradition of presenting commemorative coins to the Pope, noting that it had previously been done for the 700th anniversary as well.
Following the meeting, T. Cirill Hortobágyi expressed gratitude to Pope Francis, citing the Pope’s interest in Pannonhalma during his visits to Hungary in 2022 and 2023. Pope Francis has referred to Pannonhalma as a “bridge of brotherhood, a place of prayer, and a spiritual bastion and center,” emphasizing the importance of these aspects for the future of the abbey.
The Archabbot also briefed Pope Francis on the ecumenical efforts and commitment of the Benedictine abbey, including dialogues with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Additionally, he shared insights on pastoral work in Pannonhalma, emphasizing the adoption of synodality advocated by Pope Francis and the abbey’s endeavors in child protection and engagement with contemporary culture.
Prior to their visit to the Vatican, the Benedictine delegation participated in the Ecumenical Week of Prayer at St Paul’s Basilica and visited the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino. Reflecting on the visit to Montecassino, T. Cirill Hortobágyi highlighted the revival of a historical prayer covenant between the two abbeys, emphasizing the shared spiritual traditions and legacy of Benedictine spirituality.
