Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan Criticizes Armenia’s Coat of Arms
During a discussion with an opposition deputy in parliament, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his dissatisfaction with the state symbols, particularly the coat of arms of Armenia. Pashinyan questioned the relevance of the elements depicted on the coat of arms and suggested that it does not represent the country accurately.
He raised the point that the coat of arms features the four dynasties of Armenia and Noah’s Ark on Mount Ararat. Pashinyan pondered, “When I look at the coat of arms, I think of the question, what does it have to do with us?” He further stated that this symbolism implies destruction for Armenia.
Contrary to these views, Pashinyan acknowledged that the coat of arms holds significance as a symbol of national unity and pride. However, he pointed out that including Mount Ararat, which holds a strong cultural and historical significance for Armenians, gives the impression that it is their own territory. This, in turn, creates a sense of vulnerability and potential destruction.
Pashinyan expressed confusion as to why these symbols were chosen when Armenia gained independence in 1991. He emphasized his deep love for his country and said that such practices do not contribute to the psychological well-being of the people.
As the debate around Armenia’s state symbols continues, it remains to be seen whether any changes will be made to the coat of arms. The prime minister’s critique has sparked discussions among lawmakers and citizens alike, with differing opinions on the matter.
