PM Orbán Reacts to Pedophile Scandal as President Novák Insists on Shocking Pardon
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken a strong stance against paedophiles, declaring that there should be “no mercy” for those who commit crimes against minors. He has even gone as far as filing a constitutional amendment to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are not granted a pardon.
In a statement on Facebook, Orbán expressed his personal belief that paedophiles should not be shown any leniency. He emphasized the need for a clear and unequivocal decision regarding the powers of presidential pardon, stating that the debate on the issue must not be approached in a legalistic manner.
Orbán, who is a father of five and a grandfather of six, passionately voiced his protective instincts for children, stating that if anyone were to harm his family, his immediate reaction would be to want to see the perpetrator suffer severe consequences.
The Hungarian society and even supporters of Orbán’s Fidesz party have expressed outrage over the release of a man involved in a paedophilia case, leading to calls for the President to step down. Despite this, Orbán has not called for her resignation, even though his government upholds family-friendly and Christian values.
In response to the proposed constitutional amendment, the office of the President of the Republic has stated that it would strengthen child protections, and that President Katalin Novák would be willing to sign the legislation once it passes through parliament. This stance indicates that the President is not willing to apologize for her decision to pardon the individual, and is unwilling to take responsibility for the potential consequences of such a decision.
The controversy surrounding the presidential pardon has even prompted an opposition party to reach out to the Pope for intervention.
