Polish Lecturer Specializing in Kazakh Language Enriches Understanding of Central Asian Culture
Jakub Jakusik, a Polish lecturer at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, has a profound interest in Turkish and Central Asian culture. Specializing in the Kazakh language, Jakusik conducts research on language, culture, history, and socio-political dynamics in Türkiye and Kazakhstan. His goal is to enhance his students’ understanding and inspire them to delve deeper into these regions.
For his doctoral dissertation, Jakusik traveled to Kazakhstan to gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical connections and contemporary trends that strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. In an interview with The Astana Times, Jakusik shared his journey of learning Kazakh, his perspectives on Kazakhstan’s reforms, and the country’s increasing role on the global stage.
Jakusik began his academic journey in political science, immersing himself in Turkish language and culture during a year in Türkiye. This experience sparked his interest in Turkic studies, leading him to study Turkish and Kazakh at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Under the guidance of Professor Henryk Jankowski, Jakusik delved into the significance of studying Turkish and Kazakh languages due to their cultural and historical importance.
Reflecting on his time in Al-Farabi National University in Kazakhstan, Jakusik emphasized the importance of personal experience in language learning. Since then, he has been teaching practical Kazakh, Kazakh grammar, and Central Asian culture and society at Adam Mickiewicz University. The institution’s Section of Central Asia has played a crucial role in fostering student interest in learning Kazakh, publishing educational materials and translating works of prominent Kazakh authors.
Jakusik also highlighted Kazakhstan’s reform trajectory, including significant political and economic changes that aim to modernize governance structures. He noted the country’s strategic position in Central Asia, serving as a vital transit hub for major transportation routes and natural resources. Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy has enabled strong partnerships with global powers and neighboring countries, particularly Türkiye.
Looking ahead, Jakusik emphasized the importance of unity among Central Asian countries, emphasizing collaboration through platforms like the C5+1 and the Organization of Turkic States. He sees potential for Turkic-speaking countries to emerge as a regional power with significant global influence by collaborating on common policies and initiatives.
