Politicians React Strongly to Attack on CHP Leader Özgür Özel
In a shocking incident at the Atatürk Cultural Center, CHP leader Özgür Özel was attacked following a farewell ceremony for Sırrı Süreyya Önder. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation from various political figures across Turkey.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his concern and extended wishes for a swift recovery to Özel. He assured the public that he is closely monitoring the investigation to comprehensively uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack. Fahrettin Altun, the President of Communication, confirmed that an immediate investigation had been launched, leading to the swift detention of the assailant.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, speaking at Teknofest in Northern Cyprus, condemned the attack as "a very sad landscape," emphasizing that "politics ends where violence begins." He articulated the necessity of maintaining competitive dialogue and condemned violence in any political context.
Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş also weighed in, declaring the attack "unacceptable." He asserted that such actions undermine not just individuals but the very foundations of democracy and the shared values of the nation.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan joined the chorus of condemnation, stating that the attack on Özel was an alarming breach of Turkey’s democratic ethos. He labeled such acts as detrimental to social peace and called for unity against this type of violence.
MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli reiterated his party’s stance against all forms of violence, suggesting that the attack was a deplorable provocation at a time when the community should come together in common values.
AK Party spokesman Ömer Çelik expressed his clear rejection of the attack, emphasizing the need for legitimate politics free from provocation.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya vowed that all acts aimed at disrupting societal peace would face appropriate legal repercussions. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç echoed this sentiment, stating that it is a collective responsibility to oppose violence in any form.
Reactions also came from the Dem Party, with Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan condemning the assault as a deliberate provocation against shared societal values.
In addition, İYİ Party Chairman Musavat Dervişoğlu extended his best wishes to Özel, standing in solidarity with the CHP leader.
