Potato Perish Crisis Hits Businesses at Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan Border

Dozens of wagons loaded with vegetables were left stranded at the Saryagash station in Kazakhstan after prolonged phytosanitary inspections at the border caused the produce to freeze and rot, as reported by KTK.

Business owners revealed that the cargo, which was sold to Uzbekistan in mid-January, had all the necessary documentation completed before the export ban was implemented. However, the train was held at the border for over 10 days for inspection, leading to the potatoes in the wagons freezing and subsequently spoiling.

“The potatoes have rotted, and water is already leaking. Each wagon contains 68 tons, but now the produce is unfit even for livestock feed,” stated one of the entrepreneurs. The local administration offered to purchase the spoiled goods at half price, but the business owners declined, citing that it would not compensate for their losses.

The Ministry of Agriculture in Kazakhstan has confirmed that the inspection has been finalized, and there are no longer any barriers to crossing the border. Representatives of five affected companies are planning to take legal action against the officials accountable for the delay.
