Preparations Underway for Kazakhstan’s Nuclear Power Plant Referendum

ASTANA—The Central Election Commission (CEC) recently conducted a press conference on Sept. 3 to outline the procedures for the upcoming national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant, scheduled for Oct. 6.

During the press conference, CEC Deputy Chairman Konstantin Petrov disclosed that preparations for the referendum will span over 35 days. Voter lists are currently being compiled, and an informative campaign will soon be launched. Ballots will be distributed to polling stations the day before the referendum, as reported by Kazinform.

Petrov emphasized the importance of providing citizens with information about their designated polling stations through various platforms. It is recommended to establish call centers and chat bots for easy access to this crucial information. The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry will collaborate to ensure a seamless process.

The referendum is set to take place on Oct. 6, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Although voting times may be adjusted under special circumstances at specific polling sites, the results will be disclosed within seven days post the event. A total of 10,327 voting stations will be operational, including 72 outside Kazakhstan, catering to the 12,176,968 eligible voters as of July 1.

On Sept. 2, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev unveiled the referendum date during his annual state-of-the-nation address to Kazakh citizens at a joint parliamentary session. Stay tuned for more updates as the nation gears up for this pivotal event.
