President Considers Proposals to Enhance Education and Teacher Training in Uzbekistan

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan recently conducted a review of a presentation focused on improving the quality of school education and enhancing the teacher training system. This aligns with the country’s commitment to education reforms, as outlined in the Uzbekistan – 2030 Strategy, which prioritizes the development of a well-educated young generation.
The current state of teacher training in Uzbekistan reveals a need for improvement. While there are 15 public and 61 private higher education institutions offering degrees in pedagogy, the overall scientific potential of these institutions remains low, at only 40 percent. There is also a significant imbalance in the fields of study, with a shortage of teachers being trained in exact and natural sciences.
To address these challenges, plans are underway to elevate Tashkent State Pedagogical University to the status of Uzbekistan National Pedagogical University. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance the training of future teachers at “New Uzbekistan” University, where foreign lecturers and distinguished scholars are currently teaching in various disciplines.
The introduction of international methodologies, such as the PISA program, for evaluating students’ knowledge is also a step towards ensuring the quality of education in Uzbekistan. Furthermore, initiatives are in place to expand school capacity, with the state budget funding the creation of 112,000 new student places this year and plans to construct 58 modern schools in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank.
Recognizing the influence of the internet and social networks on school-aged children, the president has directed efforts towards creating a safe online environment, increasing the production of national content, and supporting content creators who can offer engaging and culturally relevant educational material for youth.
Overall, the Uzbek government’s focus on education reforms and teacher training highlights a commitment to providing a high-quality education for the youth of the country in line with its long-term development goals.
