President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan answered journalists’ questions on the plane on his return from Saudi Arabia, where he attended the “Extraordinary Joint Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League”.
Journalist Burcu Kaya of NTV, relayed President Erdoğan’s statements. Erdoğan spoke at length about the ongoing violence in Palestine amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, calling the situation unbearable and emphasizing the need for action.
He criticized Western countries for watching the ongoing atrocities in Palestine from the stands, accusing them of being silent in the face of the violence. Erdoğan also noted that the international community has an obligation to intervene, given the severity of the situation.
Regarding the result of the summit, Erdoğan stated that they have been working on the conclusion document and that Turkey made significant contributions to the final text asking for a stronger and more action-oriented response from member countries. The President emphasized Turkey’s intention to take further diplomatic actions in terms of gathering support from other countries. He also highlighted that the support of 121 countries at the UN in favor of Palestine is crucial.
Looking to the future, Erdoğan said that Turkey intends to continue with a phone diplomacy campaign with other countries to adjust their position about the ongoing conflict in Palestine.
Regarding the future road map of Turkey to establish peace in the region, Erdoğan highlighted that they plan to continue their effort in the international community by strengthening ties and addressing the issue with various countries such as Uzbekistan, Germany, and Algeria.
In response to the issue between Hamas and the European Union (EU), Erdoğan criticized the EU’s stance, pointing out their lack of clarity in addressing both sides of the conflict. He mentioned that the upcoming visit to Germany would provide an opportunity to clarify and discuss their stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
President Erdoğan stressed Turkey’s dedication to the cause of Palestine and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to promoting peace and justice. He remains confident in the powerful influence of Turkey’s phone diplomacy capabilities and underlined that they are already seeing signs of progress in redefining the position of countries from different regions.
