President initiates construction of 500 MW solar power plant in Fergana region
Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev recently participated in a significant ceremony marking the initiation of various industrial and energy projects in the Fergana region. The event highlighted the country’s commitment to modernization and sustainable energy development.
One of the key projects unveiled during the ceremony was the third phase of the modernization of the Kokand superphosphate plant by Indorama. Since privatization in 2019, the plant has undergone significant upgrades, with plans for production expansion to be completed by the end of 2028. This expansion will include the production of essential chemicals such as mono- and dicalcium phosphates, mono ammonium phosphate, potassium nitrate, monopotassium phosphate, calcium chloride, and a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium complex, with an estimated investment volume of $100 million.
Another significant project in the region is the construction of a 500 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the Besharyk district. This $350 million project, in collaboration with German company Hyper Partners, aims to generate renewable energy and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources. The first phase of the plant is set to be connected this year, with full operational capacity expected by 2025, generating 1.6 billion kWh of electricity annually and saving 466 million cubic meters of natural gas.
Furthermore, in the Uzbekistan district, China’s Gezhouba Group has pledged to invest $144 million in constructing an energy storage system. The 150 MW battery complex, designed for automatic activation during peak demand periods, is scheduled to be operational by the end of the year, providing crucial support to the region’s energy infrastructure.
Additionally, President Mirziyoyev inaugurated two small hydropower plants aimed at supplying electricity to residents in remote areas. These plants, located in Shahimardan and Yukori Vodil, with capacities of 2.2 MW and 430 kW respectively, will contribute to improving access to clean and reliable energy sources for local communities.
Overall, these projects underscore Uzbekistan’s commitment to advancing industrial and energy initiatives, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the country’s energy security. With continued investments in renewable energy and modernization efforts, the nation is poised for significant economic growth and development in the coming years.
