President is Sole Authority for Clemency in Fidesz
The Right of Clemency: President’s Authority Should Be Respected
The right of clemency is a privilege that is exclusively held by the president of a country, and it should be respected regardless of personal opinions, stated Fidesz’s parliamentary group leader in a recent Facebook post.
Máté Kocsis addressed the controversy surrounding a presidential pardon granted to an individual with ties to a pedophile, criticizing the opposition for their reaction. He highlighted the left wing’s refusal to support Hungary’s child protection law in 2021, their opposition to the creation of a registry of pedophile offenders, and their attempts to invalidate the 2022 referendum on the child protection law.
Furthermore, Kocsis accused the left of supporting the introduction of gender propaganda in educational institutions and challenging the child protection law at Brussels-based forums, in collaboration with their Western allies.
In his post, Kocsis drew attention to instances where the left had been silent on cases of pedophilia, including an activist linked to an opposition MP in possession of 70,000 pedophilic images, and a Democratic Coalition politician defending pedophile offenders. He also criticized the opposition mayor of Budapest’s 8th district for allegedly campaigning with a “notorious” pedophile and a Jobbik politician caught committing a crime related to child pornography.
Kocsis concluded by asserting that the Hungarian people see through the left’s “deceitful and two-faced stunts and constant lies”, and called for their silence on the issue. He also accused the “dollar media” of attacking the child protection and anti-pedophile measures.
While the controversy surrounding the presidential pardon raises important ethical and political questions, it is essential to respect the constitutional authority vested in the office of the president to exercise clemency. Regardless of differing opinions on specific pardons, it is important to recognize and abide by the legal and constitutional framework that governs the exercise of this prerogative.
