President of Uzbekistan Holds Talks with UN Counter-Terrorism Chief on Security Cooperation
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan welcomed Vladimir Voronkov, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, to participate in the first meeting of the Regional Expert Council on the rehabilitation and reintegration of returning individuals. The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UN institutions in combating terrorism and other transnational challenges.
During the meeting, Vladimir Voronkov conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to President Mirziyoyev and expressed gratitude for Uzbekistan’s support for the UN Counter-Terrorism Office. The successful outcomes of the Council’s first session in Tashkent were also acknowledged.
The parties signed an updated “roadmap” for 2024-2025, outlining new directions for collaboration, with a focus on protecting youth from extremist ideologies and expanding cooperation in training and organizing internships for young specialists at UN institutions.
The discussion also touched on the Afghan issue, emphasizing the importance of international attention to the situation in Afghanistan and the need to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. Overall, the meeting underscored the commitment of Uzbekistan and the UN to work together in addressing global challenges and promoting peace and security.
