Preventive Measure for Bektur Asanov Changed in Kempir-Abad Case

Bishkek City Court changes preventive measure for Bektur Asanov due to health condition

The Bishkek City Court has modified the preventive measure for Bektur Asanov to a written undertaking not to leave the city due to his health condition, as confirmed by lawyer Erkin Sadanbekov to 24.kg news agency.

Furthermore, the court has extended the preventive measure for the other individuals under investigation in the form of detention in the pre-trial detention center 1.

According to reports from the State Penitentiary Service, Bektur Asanov slipped and fell on a tiled floor while showering on December 4, 2023. As a result, he began to experience pain in the cervical spine. In January, he underwent surgery at the National Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the medical institution of the State Penitentiary Service No. 31 in Moldovanovka village.

The creation of the Committee for the protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir on October 22 has brought significant attention to the issue. The committee includes activists, politicians, and Members of Parliament. During an interview with Kabar news agency on the same day, President Sadyr Japarov mentioned that the authorities have information regarding those behind the rallies and marches related to the Kempir-Abad issue.

Subsequently, mass arrests began on October 23, with 27 individuals placed in jail on charges of preparing for riots. As of now, 10 people remain in custody.

The situation has prompted various international human rights organizations, such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), and Freedom Now, to issue a statement urging the immediate release of the politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
