Price Gouging in the Pharmaceutical Industry: Cheap Medicines Sold at Sky-High Prices

Illegal Pharmaceutical Laboratory Discovered in Uzbekistan

A recent joint operation conducted by the Anti-Smuggling Department of the Fergana Regional Customs and the State Security Service uncovered an underground workshop in Kokand and the Uchkurgan district where employees were illicitly repackaging inexpensive medication ampoules to sell them as premium products.

The workshop was re-labeling items such as “L-Lysine Aescinat,” “Thiocetam,” “Mydocalm,” “Retabolil,” “Diprospan,” and “Actovegin” to be sold at significantly higher prices. In addition, medications like “Kaspargin,” “Piracetam,” “Dexamethasone,” and “Ascorbic Acid” were being dyed, repackaged, and rebranded before hitting the market.

These counterfeit medications lacked proper compliance certificates and were stored in unsuitable conditions, posing a serious risk to consumers. The total value of the confiscated medications is estimated at 89 million UZS, but it is believed that they could have been sold for as much as 625 million UZS.

A criminal case has been opened to investigate this illegal pharmaceutical operation, and authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of the public. The discovery of this underground laboratory serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with counterfeit medications and the importance of enforcing regulations in the pharmaceutical industry.
