Private School Scandal: Student Charged 15 Thousand TL for 2 Thousand TL Book

Parent in Adana Files Criminal Complaint Over Overpriced School Books

A parent in Adana has filed a criminal complaint after discovering that the school books he purchased for 15 thousand liras were actually only worth 2 thousand liras. The Ministry of National Education has initiated an investigation into the matter.

Lawyer Nazan Akça Subaşı enrolled her 9-year-old daughter in a private school, only to be directed to a private bookstore for textbooks where she was issued an invoice of 15 thousand liras. When Subaşı requested a book list from the school administration, she was denied and told that if she didn’t purchase the books, her daughter would not be able to take the exams.

Subaşı expressed her frustration, stating, “I went to the stationery store and said, ‘I want to see the book list.’ I said, ‘We can’t give you a list of books. You will get the box.’ I got the answer. We need to buy that box to see what’s inside it. The price of the box is 15 thousand liras. Imagine paying 15 thousand liras for a box that you don’t know what’s inside.”

In addition, Subaşı claimed that there is an agreement between the stationery store and the private school, and has taken the matter to court. She has also urged other parents to fight for their rights in similar situations.

The Ministry of National Education’s investigation into the overpriced textbooks is ongoing, and many are eagerly awaiting the outcome. It is critical that parents and students are not taken advantage of financially by private schools and associated bookstores, and it is hoped that measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
