Progress and Divisions: Hungarian EU Presidency on Ukraine War

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán Takes Diplomatic Approach to Ukraine Crisis
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently addressed the lack of consensus within the European Union regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. Orbán emphasized the need for bilateral diplomacy in addressing initiatives related to the conflict, rather than relying on the EU framework during Hungary’s presidency.
During a press conference in Brussels alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, Orbán highlighted Hungary’s contributions and challenges during its six-month presidency. He underscored the EU’s struggle to act collectively due to internal divisions, stating that without consensus, it is difficult for the European Council to take unified action.
As a result, Hungary pursued independent efforts, including proposing a Christmas ceasefire and facilitating prisoner exchanges through diplomatic channels. Orbán emphasized the importance of pragmatic, achievable goals in addressing the crisis, contrasting them with grand geopolitical strategies.
Reflecting on the conflict in Ukraine, Orbán questioned the effectiveness of continued military strategies and stressed the need for diplomacy to lead the way in resolving the war. He expressed Hungary’s commitment to realistic peace efforts and avoiding prolonged conflicts that result in more casualties and suffering.
During its presidency, Hungary made significant strides in areas such as simplifying EU governance, promoting affordable energy, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. The presidency also advanced enlargement policies, facilitated progress with Western Balkan countries, and addressed demographic challenges within the EU.
Orbán and von der Leyen highlighted the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic ties, especially with the United States, as political landscapes shift. As Hungary concludes its presidency, Orbán emphasized the need for unity and ambition within the EU, urging to "make Europe great again."
Von der Leyen commended Hungary’s efforts in fostering internal cohesion and external expansion, ensuring the EU remains competitive and resilient globally. As Hungary passes the torch to the next EU presidency, lessons learned during the past six months emphasize the importance of pragmatic diplomacy and collective ambition in addressing complex challenges.
