Proposal to Expand Council of Judges to 20 Members

Bishkek, March 6, 2025 – The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan has approved a bill to increase the number of Council of Judges members from 15 to 20 people. This decision aims to improve gender and regional representation within the Council, as well as address the issue of having 9 out of 15 members also serving on the disciplinary commission.

Deputy Mederbek Aliev, the author of the bill, highlighted that the proposed changes would remove certain powers from the disciplinary commission, such as the authority to bring a judge to criminal liability or temporarily suspend a judge from office in case of criminal charges. These measures are considered to be outside the scope of disciplinary actions according to Aliev.

It is important to note that the members of the Council of Judges currently work on a voluntary basis and do not receive a salary. Therefore, the implementation of this law will not lead to any additional financial burden on the state.

The bill will now move forward for further readings and discussions in the Parliament to finalize the process of increasing the number of Council of Judges members. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
