Publication of Civil Servant Crime Statistics

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Uzbekistan has released statistics on the prosecution of officials in 2023, revealing an increase in the number of officials brought to criminal responsibility compared to the previous year.

According to the information published by the PGO, a total of 3,575 officials were prosecuted in 2023, which is a 15% increase from the previous year. Within these cases, 3,412 criminal cases were opened.

Interestingly, the number of republican-level officials brought to criminal responsibility decreased significantly, from 110 in 2022 to 49 in 2023. However, the number of regional and district (city) level officials involved in criminal activities remained relatively stable, with a slight increase in the latter.

The types of crimes committed by officials in 2023 were varied, with embezzlement or looting of someone else’s property being the most common, followed by abuse of official authority, fraud, and bribery-related offenses.

The total material damage caused by these crimes amounted to 1 trillion 546 billion soums, with 84.7% of the amount recovered. This represents a significant increase in the amount of damage compared to the previous year.

The release of these statistics sheds light on the issue of official misconduct and the efforts being made to hold officials accountable for their actions. It also underscores the importance of combating corruption and ensuring the integrity of public service in Uzbekistan.
