Recent Developments in Pontoon Tension in Avcılar
Ignoring Ban, Drivers Cause Chaos in Istanbul Street
In a recent incident in Istanbul’s Avcılar Cami Street, drivers ignored parking restrictions and caused chaos on the street, leading to arguments between shopkeepers and drivers.
The situation unfolded when a building in the area was demolished as part of urban transformation, causing the parking barrier bollards in front of the workplaces to be buried under rubble. Subsequently, drivers began parking their vehicles in front of the businesses. In response, the shopkeepers placed pontoons on the street to deter the drivers.
Despite the efforts to restrict parking, drivers continued to disregard the rules. The situation escalated when an IETT bus was unable to turn on the street due to the parked vehicles, leading to a heated argument between the drivers and shopkeepers.
Eventually, traffic police arrived at the scene and fined the vehicles parked incorrectly. The police also instructed the bus driver to drive over the pontoons, much to the dismay of the shopkeepers.
After the bus driver crushed the pontoons and continued on his way, traffic flow returned to normal. However, the incident highlighted the ongoing parking issues on the street, with shopkeepers urging for a more permanent solution.
In response to the chaos, hundreds of pontoons, tires, pallets, and flags that were occupying the pavements in Avcılar were later collected to restore some order to the area. Authorities are now working on finding a long-term solution to the parking problems in the neighborhood.
