Recep Tayyip Erdogan Wins Turkish Election Runoff

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won the presidential elections runoff in Turkey with over 52% of the votes after processing over 98% of the ballots, according to data from the Central Election Commission. His opponent, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, secured 47.9% of the votes. Voter turnout reached 84.7%. However, the opposition news agency Anka claims that Kılıçdaroğlu led with a minimal margin of 51% to 49% according to results from counting half of the ballots. The first round of presidential elections took place on May 14, where Erdogan failed to secure a win with 49.51% of the votes, while Kılıçdaroğlu won 44.88%. Sinan Ogan, who finished third with 5.17% of the votes, urged his supporters to vote for Erdogan in the runoff. The CEC initially postponed publishing preliminary voting results until May 28 at 9 p.m., but lifted the ban after 6 p.m. on May 28.
