Rediscovering a Rare Plant: Last Minute Turkey News on the Difficult Process of Cultivation and Collection
A decade ago, the Ministry of Forestry launched a project aimed at promoting alternative sources of income for farmers in Edirne, Turkey. The project, which is 80 percent funded by grants and 20 percent covered by farmers, has gained significant attention and has provided a new source of revenue for local farmers.
Lalapaşa Chamber of Agriculture President Taner Öztürk highlighted the success of the project, stating that 15 families came together to work the land and plant almond trees. By diversifying their crops, farmers have been able to increase their average income and ensure stability for their families. Öztürk emphasized the importance of introducing alternative products to prevent migration from rural areas and boost the local economy.
Almonds, a traditional product of Edirne, have seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to projects like this. Caner Yankaya, a producer from Çömlekköy, noted that this year’s almond harvest has been particularly fruitful, despite challenges such as extreme weather conditions. He emphasized the profitability of almond cultivation and the resilience of the crop to climate change.
Overall, the success of this project highlights the potential for rural development through innovative agricultural practices and collaboration between farmers and government agencies. By promoting alternative products and sustainable farming methods, communities like Lalapaşa can thrive and prosper for years to come.
