Reducing Carbon Footprint Through Cross-Border Cooperation in Central Asia
Close cross-border cooperation and trade policy reform in Central Asia and its neighboring countries are key strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of trade activities and value chains. This important topic was discussed at a special session during the 57th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank, as reported by the 24.kg news agency based in Bishkek.
The Central Asian region is currently experiencing the impacts of climate change, while trade has played a significant role in economic growth and development. However, it has also led to an increase in carbon emissions. According to the World Trade Organization, approximately 20-30 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions are linked to trade and supply chains.
Eugene Zhukov, ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, highlighted that countries in the CAREC region heavily depend on trade and fossil fuels. Nonetheless, there is potential for these countries to transition to cleaner energy sources. By harmonizing policies and standards under the ADB-supported Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program, trade can be increased while making supply chains more sustainable and less carbon-intensive.
ADB emphasizes the need for a regional approach in Central Asia to establish green standards. Coordinated policies on decarbonization and carbon pricing can optimize the use of regional resources, enhance economic integration, and facilitate technology transfer.
Lyaziza Sabyrova, ADB’s Central and West Asia Regional Cooperation Division Manager, mentioned that with the support of development partners, CAREC is working to expand climate finance initiatives. This support aims to hasten the transition to clean energy and build resilience against the impacts of climate change.
In conclusion, the collaboration and commitment of Central Asian countries and their neighbors to implement green policies and practices in trade will not only benefit the environment but also foster sustainable economic growth in the region.
