Kyrgyz Parliament Reduces Electoral Deposit for Candidates with Disabilities
On January 29, 2025, the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan made a significant decision by reducing the electoral deposit for candidates running for deputies with disabilities. The new bill, adopted in the third reading, aims to promote inclusivity and accessibility in the country’s political landscape.
Previously, the electoral deposit for all candidates stood at 100,000 soms. However, with the new amendment, candidates with disabilities of group I will now only have to pay 50,000 soms, a 50% reduction. Similarly, candidates with disabilities of group II will see a 25% decrease, with their deposit now set at 75,000 soms.
In addition to the changes in electoral deposits, the bill also includes provisions to prevent individuals convicted of corruption and other official crimes from running for president, serving as a deputy in Parliament, or working in the Cabinet. This move is seen as a step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in Kyrgyzstan’s political sphere.
MP Dastan Bekeshev expressed his support for the bill, acknowledging the potential impact it may have on political opponents. He highlighted the importance of addressing corruption within the government and the need to uphold ethical standards in public office.
