Renovation of Iconic Heroes’ Square Statue Reveals Time Capsule Contents and Photos
The Archangel Gabriel statue, a beloved symbol of Heroes’ Square in Budapest, has been removed for restoration after 120 years. To ensure visitors can still experience the majesty of the statue, a replica has been placed on display at the Városliget Visitor Center. The restoration process revealed a time capsule hidden within the statue, containing a wine bottle with a rolled-up piece of paper and eight contemporary coins.
The removal of the statue was necessary due to the deterioration of both its exterior and structural integrity. The restoration team is using modern technologies to thoroughly renovate the statue, aiming to preserve it for another 120 years. The exhibition at the Museum of Ethnography allows visitors to learn about the history of the statue and take part in an interactive journey through time.
During the restoration process, a time capsule was discovered within the column head of the Millennium Monument. Although the paper inside the wine bottle was unreadable due to moisture, the eight historical coins found inside are on display at the exhibition. The monument, completed in 1896 to commemorate the Hungarian conquest, is a symbol of Hungarian statehood and history.
